In which Retsu is also a Mama Blue Ranger

So what you’re saying is that Jan has two mommies?

Jan has like six mommies okay.

Ran, Retsu, Miki, Natsume (at the very least she uses for practice)…who are the other two mommies to Jan?

His literal birth mother (who did raise him for a while) and Ken will probably be his sixth mommy just because he doesn’t want to be left out and everyone is like “okay fine if thats what you want” just so he won’t try and prove it by wearing a dress again.

New headcanon

Miyuki and Miki were totally delinquent girls together.

(Although I do legit headcanon Miyuki as being quite the hellion before she settled down. Kai has to get it from somewhere.)

Suzuko of Gingaman was also in that delinquent girls gang.  It was a scary time to be an entitled douche in Tokyo, I’ll tell you that much.

(I’m just picturing Miyuki repeatedly leaving Blagel/Isamu totally flabbergasted during their courtship, and it is glorious.)

oh my god this is the most beautiful headcanon I’ve ever seen in my fucking life

PapaCheifu: I also like how Akashi and Sakura walk up next to her all like

Schedule, Megaforce, and women in Kyoryuger

Hi! I’m still feeling out my posting schedule, and am still busy, but since Kyoryuger and Megaforce are premiering soon, I figured I’d get some of my thoughts down. I will be watching Megaforce, and discussing it on an episodic basis (although these will be fairly informal blogs since I’ll be doing as they premiere; if I feel it’s worth embellishing upon I’ll write a more indepth post). For now, I want to ‘gather my thoughts’ concerning women in Kyoryuger.

The cast for Kyoryuger was revealed not too long ago, and there has been some discussion concerning that we have one woman on the team again, and how this will affect Saban (which has always had two women at least, unlike Disney, who didn’t add any women even if there was only one on the team). There has also been some discussion about which is ‘better,’ one woman or two. I know some people have argued ‘quality over quantity,’ and I can understand that to an extent. However… we would never hear ‘I’d rather have one well-written man than two poorly written ones.’ Ever. Men are still considered the default; women are the Other and can be included/excluded at whim.

And speaking for myself, it is just silly to think writers can write only one woman well, and suddenly be horrible if they add even one more. While sentai writers are essentially creating toy commercials, they’ve still trained and practiced writing. If they can’t write more than one woman each season at least passably, then they kind of stink at their job. Fandom needs to stop treating the writers with kid gloves.

However, I don’t think having one woman Ranger means that automatically excludes a gender balanced cast (or at least something closer to it). Abaranger had one female character, Ranru. But they had three other women in supporting roles/antagonists, which helped to even things out in my eyes. If Nick and/or Saban decide to have only one woman, I do think they could balance out the gender ratio with a lot of women in the supporting cast. It’s not quite the same, and there are still issues, but I feel that it could help.

And while women in the supporting cast aren’t the same, sometimes you wind up with a season where your female ranger is Lily who is just kind of… there, and the supporting female cast is Fran, who is quite possibly one of the best characters in the entire damn franchise.

Of course, it’s best for *all* the characters to be so well created and acted, but I was just supporting the “one female ranger does not equal only one chance at a good female character” idea.

uhm uhm uhm

can i just say one thing?

What if KyoRyuger pulls YET ANOTHER GO-ONGER and brings in another female character as it’s 6th? (or in a 6th/7th combo) I mean there are so many comparisons to Go-Ogner being made that WHY IS NO ONE CONSIDERING THAT?

Also, can I pose Gekiranger as another example of “one female ranger but still has a really great female cast”? Because Mele is basically the fandom’s baby and also there is Miki who was a fucking glorious under-appreciated human being and her daughter who put basically every memeber of the cast in their place at least once.

And while Magiranger did have two girls on the team the best women in that cast were elsewhere in the show okay.

Supporting and villain gals are great.

But please take a look at my original point because why is that not being taken into consideration?

I would love Kyoryuger to hell and back if it had a female sixth who didn’t have to be partnered with a super-perfect male counterpart.  I mean, I’ll still be okay even if that does happen, because I’m not going to argue against more ladies, but I know what my preferences are.

And yes, Gekiranger is a great example of “lone female ranger, great supporting women”, though with Magiranger I say all the women are great and there is no limited supply of greatness to go around.

Miki is my favorite character in Gekiranger and you can all bite me.

I never said any of the women in Magiranger weren’t great. You were there when I liveblogged. You know I think they’re all spectacular. But I needed to make the point that Magiranger has two girls on the main team because it does and we were talking about teams with one female.

Also Miu was just as “super perfect” as Hiroto. :T She doesn’t get exempt from the bullshit that was the Go-On Wings just because she’s a girl.

I would only bite you where and when you’d want me to Scorpion Mama.

Yes, you’re absolutely right, I got ahead of myself and got a bit foot-in-mouth going on.

I don’t think they played it up with Miu as much as they did with Hiroto, but yes, they were both in on it.

Excuse me

i’m never fucking getting over this
